Etched Marble Countertop

St. George, Utah

Marble has always been a popular choice for countertops in kitchens and bathrooms. The colors and veins found in the natural stone are very unique. Those of you that are unfamiliar with the proper care and maintenance of marble, please take note. Polished marble is easily damaged by the acid present many foods, drinks and beauty products. The acid reacts negitively with the stone and causes what we call an "etch mark". Etch marks can look like the ring from a glass or a splash mark from a spill. Regardless of how the damage occurs, the result is the same. The mark is clearly visible when you view the surface from an angle. This is because the damaged area does not reflect light in the same way the undamaged surface does. Unfortunately, there is not a sealer on the market that will protect your marble from this type of chemical damage. So what do you do? Use cutting boards when preparing foods, coasters for glasses and clean up any spills ASAP. Dont worry if an accident does happen, afterall your home is meant to live in. Normally etch marks can be removed with polishing and bring the surface back to it's original condition. If your marble needs some help, give the folks at Suva Tile a call for a free consultation. With proper care, marble surfaces will easily last for generations.
